Course Description

General Course Prerequisites:

• Student must be 16 years of age by September 1, 2024 to enter the class.
• Genuine interest in pursuing a career in the emergency medical field
  Parental permission prior to specific activities
  Purchase and wear a selected uniform to wear on selected days
  Purchase of liability insurance
• FEES:  This course requires a student materials fee as listed in FCPS Notice 5922.

Emergency Medical Technician 1:

Course #:  833326 – Grades: 11, 12 – Credits:  One

This is part one (fall semester) of a two-part, full-year course. Students must also register for part two, Emergency Medical Technician 2 for the spring semester. Emergency Medical Technician 1 prepares the student to enter the workforce or pursue further education in the field of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). The principles and practices of emergency response will be explored under the direct supervision of a certified EMT-B instructor. The curriculum consists of planned learning experiences in the classroom, laboratory, and faculty supervised clinical settings. Students will have the opportunity to observe and interact with a variety of patients experiencing varying degrees of injury or disease that are carefully selected to provide appropriate clinical learning experiences. As preparation, students will be provided with ample lab practice to fully prepare them for the clinical experience and minimize risks. During the course of study, students will have the opportunity to earn the following six certifications: Healthcare Provider CPR, Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B), and Hazardous Materials Response, Bloodborne Pathogens, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Introduction to Incident Command systems (ICS 100B, 200). Offsite clinical lab opportunities at Northern Virginia Community College, Medical Education Center (NVCC MEC), and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Academy will be available to the students. Students must purchase uniforms and liability insurance and meet current health agency requirements to participate in clinical experiences. Validated credit may be an option with NVCC.
