Facts to know about Blood Donation!

  • 4.5 million Americans would die every year without any blood transfusions
  • 32,000 pints of blood are used everyday in the U.S.
  • One pint of blood can save up to 3 people
  • Four main blood types: A, B, AB, O- AB is the universal recipient and O is the negative universal donor
  • About three gallons of blood supports the entire nation's blood needs for one minute
  • If all blood donors gave 2 to 4 times a year, it would help prevent blood shortages.
  • Much of today's medical care depends on a steady supply of blood from health donors.

Who is eligible to donate blood

  • You must be in good general health
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds
  • Be at least 16 years old (must have parent consent until age 17)
  • 16 year olds are NOT eligible to donate platelets
