Course Description
American Sign Language 1:
Course #: 599026 – Grades: 9th - 12th – Credits: One
Students develop the ability to communicate about themselves and their immediate environment using simple sentences containing basic language structures. This communication is evidenced in signing, receiving signs and non-manual gestures, and reading. Students begin to explore and study the themes of Personal and Family Life, School Life, Social Life, and Community Life. This course may be counted as a world languages course in fulfilling requirements for the Advanced Studies Diploma.
American Sign Language 2:
Course #: 599526 - Grades: Grades: 9th - 12th – Credits: One
Prerequisite: ASL 1 or equivalency test
American Sign Language 2 students continue to develop proficiency. They learn to function in real-life situations using more complex language structures and a wider range of vocabulary. Students continue to explore as they study the themes of My Activities, My Home Life, Around Town/Travel, Health & Fitness, and Stories. This course may be counted as a world languages course in fulfilling requirements for the Advanced Studies Diploma.
American Sign Language 3:
Course # 599726 - Grades: Grades: 9th - 12th – Credits: One
Prerequisite: ASL 2 or equivalency test
American Sign Language 3 students continue to develop and refine their proficiency. They communicate using more complex language structures on a variety of topics moving from concrete to more abstract concepts. At this level students add vocabulary and idiomatic expressions in the context of everyday interactions and social relationships. Students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them while studying the themes of My Memories, Teen Life, My Future, Conservation & Ecology, and Literature and Media. This course may be counted as a world languages course in fulfilling requirements for the Advanced Studies Diploma.
American Sign Language 4 - Honors:
Course #599826 - Grades: Grades: 9th - 12th – Credits: one/weighted +.5
Prerequisite: ASL 3 or equivalency test
American Sign Language 4 HN students continue to develop and refine their proficiency. They communicate using complex language structures on a variety of topics, moving from concrete to abstract concepts. At this level, students add vocabulary and idiomatic expressions in the context of everyday interactions and social relationships. Students begin to explore the world of interpretation. Students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them while studying Deaf Heritage and Culture, Globalization, Environment, Technology and innovations, and Human Expression.
